Brian Ferguson
Studio and Live Drum Set Performance
Author/Clinician/Educator
Brian Ferguson began playing drums and percussion at the age of
ten and has never looked back. His musical ability has led to
performances throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Brian
currently plays for the Dallas based quintet, Eleven Hundred Springs.
1100 Springs have developed a massive fan base across Texas, California
and the South through constant touring, relentless grassroots promotion
and making country jams that are second to none. Brian has
toured and recorded with Curtis Salgado (Santana, Room Full of
Blues) and Mike Morgan and the Crawl. As a free-lance drummer
Brian has performed with Kim Wilson(the Fabulous Thunderbirds),
Red Young(Eric Burdon), Pat Boyack(Marcia Ball), Norton Buffalo
(Steve Miller), and Jim Suhler. He is a much sougth after session drummer
with numerous recordings to his credit.

The St. Louis, Missouri native joined the school band in 5th
grade and enrolled in private music lessons with the late great
Pat Hanley. Brian recalls sitting behind his uncle's drum set
at an early age. When it came time to enroll in band, Brian knew
he wanted to play drums. By this time, his uncle had quit
playing, so Brian's parents traded some old shelves for the
drum kit. Percussion lessons with Hanley were very strict. Brian
learned all the standard rudiments, keyboard percussion, tympani
and drum set. He performed with the middle school percussion
ensemble and recalls a trip to Kansas City to perform at the
Percussive Art's Society Convention. Brian's father was
also an early influence. His record collection included Benny
Goodman's Sing, Sing, Sing with Gene Krupa on drums, the
Venture's Wipe Out, as well as great Motown, soul and jazz
records. His father often pulled out these records as musical
example.
High school was a very busy time for Brian. He performed with
the marching band, concert band, jazz band, percussion ensembles
and pit band for theater productions. Brian was a member of the
St. Louis All-Region Concert and Jazz Bands. His senior year he
was an alternate for the Missouri All-State Jazz Band. Upon
graduation, Webster Groves High School presented Brian with the
John Phillip Sousa Award for outstanding musical achievement.
During this time, Brian was exposed to great music and pushed to
new levels of performanace, through the teaching of Mike Ehrhard
at Drum Headquarters.
Brian moved to Denton, Texas in 1991 to study music at the
University of North Texas. Brian's studies at UNT were a
prosperous time. He played snare drum for the UNT drumline,
studied drumset with Ed Soph and Henry Okstel, and performed with
a wide variety of musical ensembles from Javanese Gamelon to
small group jazz bands.
In 2001, Brian began performing with Curtis Salgado, touring the
United States and Canada. Curtis is best known as the original
Blues Brother, being the inspiration behind John Belushi's
Blues Brothers character Jake. Curtis is one of the finest
blues/soul vocalists and has fronted Santana, The Robert Cray
Band and Room Full of Blues. The Salgado Band created a positive
buzz among blues enthusiasts as well as the music press with
high-energy shows that fused funk, soul, gospel, New Orleans and
blues styles. Blues Review Magazine called Brian's playing
"…totally on the money rhythmically, while keeping
the loose feel that soul music requires." Salgado has been
quoted, "Brian's shuffle [groove is the] best in the
business!"
Brian was a member of the house band for the 2003 Society for
the Preservation and Advancement of Harmonica's national
convention in Dallas, where he backed up Mark Ford of the Ford
Brothers, and Norton Buffalo of the Steve Miller Band. As a
sideman, Brian has shared the stage with many notable musicians,
including Kim Wilson(the Fabulous Thunderbirds), Bob Margolin
(Muddy Waters), Greg Piccolo (Room Full of Blues), Joseph Wooten
(Steve Miller, Victor Wooten), Johnny Sansome and JW Jones.
Brian has toured and/or recorded with a who's who of great
artists including but not limited to: Jim Suhler, Jacob Petersen,
Quinten Hope, Pat Boyack, Red Young, Mike Morgan, Hope Cassity,
Jon Christopher Davis, Joel Foy, Big Daddy 'O', Randy
McAllister, and Chris and Diane Machen. Currently, Brian performs
with Eleven Hundred Springs and George Anderson's
Signature Band. Brian is a busy free-lance musician who regularly
performs with Prestonwood Baptist Church. Brian operates his own
teaching studio in the North Dallas area. He has authored the
Contemporary Drum Set Method and can currently be seen on the Vic
Firth drumstick company's website as a featured drum set
educator, presenting weekly video drum lessons.
Brian resides in McKinney, TX with his wife of 11
years and their 3 dogs.
